Beginning a Quest in Space

Really going back in the catalogue to combat the unpainted masses.  This time back to 1990 with Space Crusade.  Finished up the first squad of Ultramarines and printed out some fancy bases for them as well:

Taking some extra time on this project, its honestly an amazingly well done game and fun to play.

For-T-K?

Yep since we have a new edition I had to paint up a new demo for Warhammer 40k!  I'm still not a fan of it at all but hey other people enjoy it and it's tough to demo a game without a worthwhile demo.  Let's face it the last starter set was a 2:1 points ratio so that was no good even then let alone now.

The new marines are possibly the most dull and un-creative models I've ever painted.   The poses are uninspired (they all look bored) and other than some very minor changes to the armor they are just the same old sculpts blown up in a 3d cad program and re-posed to be less dynamic.

To top it off for me at least the 'reivers' or whatever they are called look the same except they have a little skull faceplate.  Don't worry there is NO WAY that that tiny detail will be lost on the battlefield and just be confused for more giant sized marines.  Seriously GW this is just lazy and frankly boring but others who have never painted marines in the past may enjoy them more.

Whoever did the nurgle sculpts on the other hand did a MUCH better job!  Sure the poses are rather blah but try getting a demonic space zombie to be dynamic and make sense.  The nurgle symbolism is carried throughout the model and there are plenty of little details all over the place.  On top of this since they are nurgle you can go as in depth or as quickly on the paint job as you want and it will still look just fine!  Major props to these guys they were fun to paint!

And these little pox walkers were equally a blast.  It's like painting cultists but instead of wanting to tear your hair out over the boredom experienced you actually get to have a ton of fun painting little bits of tentacles and boils and all sorts of gooey fun.  They also aren't so overloaded on little doo dads and trinkets that they look like anything but a basic rank and file minion so well done again.

So overall I think the new space marines are just another in a long line of 'how do we get them to buy another space marine army' cash grab but the nurgle stuff actually has a lot of soul and attention to details in it.  Always fun to paint nurgle too!

Goodbye to the Knights

Well we all know that once in a while its time to clean the closets and get rid of things that just aren't useful anymore.  I have not been a fan of 40k for some time (especially after KoW 1st edition came out).  It just never was a very well balanced game between factions but even more than that as the editions kept coming it relied more and more on just having a better list than your opponent.

This just seemed to come to a head with the latest rendition of 8th edition.  Admittedly I tried it only once but watched many games and it seems to be down to whoever made the better list and whether or not they go first.  For me this just isn't a game worth playing since it is decided on the first die roll but generally takes 2-4 hours to finish fully.  Thus I decided to sell the only fully finished 40k army I have:

Plenty of good times and bad with these buggers but I just can't hold on for 9th edition to possibly 'save' my interest in the game.  More pics on the completed army page:

Elves, Creeps and Cities

A few new things are done or at least done-ish.  I've been agonizing over how I wanted my elf army to look and finally came up with something suitably elfy:

I still need some more elves finished before there are enough to meet at least minimum model count but it's nice to have the formula down. Yes my madness does force me to paint something pink at least once a year...

Next up I needed some genestealers to steal some genes during the Sodak Con space hulk game.  Of course I just had to do an aliens rip off not only because I can but because its super fast:
 

Finally (and with much more effort) our infinity group needed a map to campaign on.  apparently they've gotten jealous of the Kings of War one so two butchered monopoly sets, 1 butchered catan, expansion and seafarers set, tiles from the original mighty empires by GW (yes all the city blocks are those tiles which are VERY out of print) and I now have only my second most expensive campaign map...   Yes I need help!

Still despite my descent into madness I like the finished result.

Speedy Marines

Decided to do a Space Hulk game for the local con so I need to paint up the usual suspects for said game.  First step are four distinct squads of terminators.  Wanted to get these done as fast as possible as I really really don't like painting marines anymore than I have to....

Might go back some day and hit real highlights on them but considering the mound of painting projects it is doubtful.  Sometimes you just settle on a 'good enough' job.

More Fists and Some Infinity

Yet more crimson fists leave the table to parts unknown.  This time a speeder, drop pod and Chapter Master are out the door!

First Eldar!

Back With More Random!

Been a while but I'm back in a new house with a new workspace and new stuff!  First up another Mexi Marine Squad.  This time the legion of the damned squad:

Also to prove its totally random here is a Star Wars X Wing board I finished up for the FLGS:

Its 4' X 4' so plenty of fly room to be had for large battles.

Books for Fists

Finished up the Librarian for the Crimson Fists.  Really like how this one turned out but I can't wait for next month when I don't have commissions to work on!

Tanks And Things

Finished up a re-paint of a parking lot worth of tanks.  Quite the marathon of painting but I like the results.

Paging Mr Calgar

Finished up a conversion of Marneus Calgar for a client and I love the results myself!  May have taken a whole day but it was totally worth it!

Also finished up a 6x4 warhammer board which I'll get pictures for soon...

Marine Time

Finished up another crimson fists commission work and I'm really happy with the results on this vet squad and dreadnaught.

An finally got a pic snapped of the last unit for my Grey Knights army.  Mordrak and his fellow ghost knights!

Nurgle: End Game

After all that work its finally done.  The final Nurgle piece is done and the army is ready to go!  The titan turned out to be epically putrid as well!

And of course the rest of the army that has been done for some time now:

No army is complete without objective markers so added these in as a bonus.

Putrid Fun!

Finished up another major step on the titan.  The looking is finally starting to come together after a massive amount of washing and tweaking I'm happy with the basic colors and flow.  The finishing touches are coming up soon which will add a nice layer of filth to it...

Still need some work on the OSL in the back.  The smoke from the reactor is coming along nicely as is the tongue (both not pictured).

And one of my favorite landraider I've ever done by far.  There are so many little weird touches all over this one making it nice and nurgly.
