Warhammer Quest Finale?

These were finished up a long time ago (roughly a year) but they mark what may just be the end of my WHQ painting.  Being the thing that started this blog its only right to make sure they are on here!

The last thing I added to the custom rules is a new table and monsters for Undead themed encounters.

Fluorescent paint takes center stage with the various apparitions like these ghost swarms.  One them had a part get lost so I improvised with it being a poltergeist throwing a chair.

These Carion are 3D prints I found around my mini factory.

The bat swarms are absolutely a pain to print but look great.

The direwolves looking suitably disgusting.

The revenantssouls with their rusty sabers.

I was surprised to find spectral guard with crossbows.  Didn't think anyone would have made sculpts but I got lucky and Myminifactory.com as always provides!

Finally the Enslaved Souls for the smaller ghosts.

I've had this Reaper Bone Giant for ages just sitting in a drawer waiting for this moment.  Really awesome sculpt.

The Morghast surprisingly printed right away the first time.  Nice and easy paint up too!

And the undead family photo!  I still need to at least do a full picture with all the WHQ models to celebrate this project being done.  We even finished up our most recent campaign getting to level 10 and fighting Amon Cha'Kai!

Dwarves Vs Zombies?

Wellp time to fill in a few Kings of War armies.  Before starting a new project I thought it would be good to fill in a few of the less painted armies, plus my son is having a blast with Battle Masters and the minis work great there too!

Another unit of Dwarf Ironguard with a mix of GW and Avatars of war.  The unit champion is from a friend and I have no idea where it originally came from.

My third regiment of zombies for the undead army, this is an army I'd really like to bring up to speed since at this point I can only stretch it to maybe 1500 points.

Speaking of battle masters we tried another set of experimental lists.  This time the dragons were soundly beaten back by the elves.  Buff and nerfs were to follow...

More Questing

Its been a very long time but I have some photos banked that need editing and posting so here's the lastest batch of Warhammer Quest monsters finished up for Lustria, Norsca and Sewers.

With the baby stegadon already done here's the ancient stegadon

The Behemoth spider has been in a near complete stage for ages but now its finished.

I really didn't like the chaos dragon model when I originally put it together but I gained an appreciation for it while painting for sure.  Lots of little details and fun surprises.

The cygor was fun to paint just a spray gradient and pick out details.

Picked up another stegadon to have an engine of the gods without dealing with a magnet nightmare

For Norsca the Level 11 encounters can result in exalted greater daemons.  A very rare thing but I did have models for them so first up the Bloodthirster from ultraforge (think they are troll forge now).

From the same company the great unclean one.  Went for a very pale scheme on this one really like how it turned out.

The keeper of secrets complete with chrome pool beneath.

And from Mierce miniatures a lord of change, this guy is buff and massive!

Again to avoid magnet nightmares I got a seperate ghorgon even though being gargantuan monsters they can never appear alongside the cygor model.

I realized I had used the original mummies in my Empire of Dust army so I used these frankly awesome looking mantic mummies for quest

The sewers introduced a mythic troll just because we always need more trolls.

Plague Drones now show up in Norsca adding some variety to the daemon roster.

Rat swarms are fun not only pinning warriors down but making it difficult for others to aid them without accidently striking their own allies who are engulfed in rats.

I've got a surprising amount of Slaan for Lustria, still more to come...

And the Yheeti's finish off this batch of pics

Recently Risen Reinforcements

We are doing a 'It's How You Play It' game day for Kings of War in a week.  I'll be supplying most of the painted armies for it so I need to kick some painting into high gear!  The undead army I finished up didn't quite play well and felt like it was missing nearly everything.  So I added some reinforcements to it in order to bring up the power level a bit.

The big thing it was lacking was killing power so a troop of soul reaver cavalry should do the trick.

Then ditching the skeletons to upgrade my regiment of revenants to a horde should help even more.

The hard part now is finishing two hordes of peasants for the Brotherhood in just a few work days...

New Army Eats Brains

When I was a wee young lad getting into Warhammer I settled on the undead army as my first army book (yes back when they were a unified book).  That army was long since sold away to someone on Ebay whom I'm sure stripped it and started over (not that I blame them).  Finally though I have a new army with a super fun swamp theme though!

The most time consuming portion of the army was getting more water effects in for the swamp bases because all the ones in the local store were dried up!  I guess I'm the only crazy person doing water effects around here...

The wights mantic came up with are really an amazing model set.  Wasn't sure how they would pull off a large infantry wight but they really hit it out of the park.

I decided to differentiate the revenants from the regular skeleton rank and file I would just make them Scooby Doo style ghosts.  You can really paint up a good 2000 points of these guys in no time since it's a simple set of dry brushing and you're done!

The skeleton archers are a lot better looking than most out there.  Really the only complaint I have about Mantic's skeletons is that they have so much more detail than the old GW ones I was used to back in the way way before time and thus require more time.  Those old skeletons were literally just a wash and a drybrush then pick out the weapons!

The zombies painted up mostly in a single night so it won't be too hard to up them to a legion or even just another horde.

Finally we come to the only two non Mantic models a reaper lich and an old armored skeleton from GW as a revenant King.

How to: Swamp Bases

Project ADD has set in and its time to start a new army.  As such it's a perfectly good time for a basing tutorial.  This time we are making some boggy quagmire for the undead legions to rise from.

You will need:

Vallejo water texture (or some other water effect)
Paints
Cork
Plasticard (I'm using a 2mm thick piece)
Glue
Sand
suitably marshy flock (I used gale force 9 but there are plenty of options for this type of base)

To start off with I've taken broken up cork and glued it onto the plasticard.  These will be the little spots of land between the swampy bog so be ready to leave room for miniatures to stand on both land and swamp.  The stone monument came from somewhere in a bits box and was just added for fun.

After our usual priming of black I've gone back and painted all the land parts dark blue.

Next mix some blue in with grey and dry brush all the land.  This should give you slightly weird and unnatural blue tint to your land.  Hang on it's about to make sense...

Next we finish off the land parts with a sepia wash.  This will leave the land looking suitably dingy and disgusting.  On top of that the sepia over blue makes a fun weird color that's a little hard to pin down and thus may lead to further madness.

Next I have taken my finest cheap paint (walmart acrylics even!) and painted all the water purple.

Without waiting for it to dry mix a little black and purple and start blending it in to begin making the deeper portions of the bog.  Remember it will get deeper as we move away from the land masses and thus darker.

Again without waiting for it to dry start mixing more and more black in until you are happy with the overall coloring.  The transition won't have to be super smooth as our water effects will mask imperfections later.

Speaking of water....

It's easiest to put your miniatures that will be partially submerged in the swamp down first before we do water effects.  Once their glue is dry apply a thick coat of water texture all over the water areas.  If you are using vallejo water texture it will go on white and (trust me) eventually dry clear.  Thicker areas may take upwards of 24 hours to fully dry.

Once the water is dry (and only after it is dry) add some flock to the land areas for a little variety and done!

And Done.

Finished up the old world monster tables for Warhammer Quest finally!

First up are the Slaanesh and Khorne chaos warriors just to be complete.  This way no matter which god your chaos warrior chooses I've got it covered!

The dark elves were a bit of a salvage job as they already came painted (horribly) so some details are no longer present.
Finally the last new thing to be finished are a selection of chaos characters to be used in various strange monster encounters.  Lots of flavor and variety in these one which is always fun to paint.
As for the unposted old photos there are a ton!  Here goes:

Needed a few beastmen characters on some entries so of course reaper provides.

The chimera is from reaper as the new GW one is WAY to big to fit in the dungeon as a normal large monster.
Goblin characters are some of the most fun models to paint.

The gorgons are from reaper and in spite of the mono-pose they work well.

The bull god incarnate in the great taurus:

The reaper griffon is a wonderful model nice and easy to paint and a classic pose.

Another once hard to find model the lamasu.  Of course now GW has them back up for sale at prices that nearly match what I paid on ebay for them....

An old classic liche model.

After playing dark souls I decided the manticore needed to be white :)

I love this reaper minotaur character and I only had to touch up and shade the pre paint work that it came with as its one of the legend rubber models.

I wish I had waited to paint this model as its the necromancer from avatars of war.  Not sure I really did it much justice...

Poo daemons or nurglings you decide!

The rat ogres were bought off ebay and came painted however despite this I thought i'd leave the paint job on them as they aren't too bad.

Some more skaven characters (so tired of painting skaven!)

And yet more skaven... so many rats!

I have several flamers in multiple colors/eras of models  fun ones to paint too.
 And of course zombies.

So whats next?  First up is going to be a group shot which will take some work to get together but should be done soonish.  After that its on to lustria!
