Battle Master Report

Here's a wargaming battle report you don't see, at all.  My son (at the enlisting age of 6) and I sat down for a game of the old Battle Masters.  But since I have a problem we are using custom armies of rat-men and Dwarves!  The armies are as follows:

1

Starts with 5 combat, each time it is hit it loses 1 combat and is destroyed when reduced to zero combat.  Moves at double speed.

We were also playing with a slight change where each player keeps their own deck of cards instead of just shuffling all of them together.  This makes sure that we alternate turns (at least until the units begin to dwindle and turns get skipped for drawing destroyed units).

The first several turns are the usual advancing as the dwarf spearmen got left behind and the Giant ratman and wheel charged quickly ahead!

The rat man especially got up close and personal right away though perhaps a little unsupported.

Early on the Dwarf army pulled their 'Move whole army' card and put wounds into the Giant Ratman with the warriors and berserkers.

Luckily for the Rats nothing else could get into combat just yet!

In a fit of angry rat energy they too pulled their own move army card!  The Giant Ratman did nothing sadly as the warriors held firm.

The Wheel on the other hand rammed into the side of the Juggernaut and did 3 wounds crippling the mighty war engine!

On the other side of the river the Rat Cavalry smash into the dwarven cavalry and deal minor damage.

The Rats overcharged their wheel rolling a six on the next turn and blowing up taking the Juggernaut with them and damaging the miners, a troubling early loss indeed. Meanwhile the berserkers traded blows with the warriors and storm vermin as the rats advanced.

The cavalry counter charged into the rats nearly routing them but they still hold!

Now the battle has truly joined and the forces clash in the middle.

The berserkers, though brave, lacked the ability to hold out for long as the Giant Ratman terrorizes them into oblivion.

The muskets finally make it into position to unleash a volley into the Elite rats.

A pox falls upon the tower though as the plague rats take control gaining the only literal high ground!

Though the spearmen held out against the tower's onslaught the warriors that snuck around the flank swooped in to finish them off.

The Giant Ratman had done its damage but was felled by the brave dwarven warriors.  Another terrible loss of the cheese lovers!

With the miners coming in to avenge the fallen spearmen things were looking bad for those covered in fur.

The snipers across the river did manage to wound the dwarf cavalry again, one more and a very powerful unit would be removed!

As much as they tried though the snippers would be charged, and charged again being driven back to whatever hole they first emerged from!

Though having only a lowly two dice the ratkin rallied and struck a major blow against the miners!

At this point the Rat line was beginning to encircle the dwarves but suddenly the earth itself shook!

The deadly board gaming cat has emerged to ravage the tower!

As the creature is chased from the battlefield the war continues with the elites charging the dwarven fire line. and breaking the center!

Originally we were playing with the snippers having 3 range to their attack which has been dialed down since.  This was super powerful and may have changed things a bit.

It didn't help that they acted in quick succession blowing a whole warrior unit off the board!

With their center line crushed the rat line moved in for the kill as the dwarf cavalry and spearmn had finally arrived from destroying the rat flank!

The rat men were wise to this sending their deadliest two dice attacks in to damage the spears!

Though wounded and exhausted the cavalry came to the rescue and removed the rat warriors with a single charge!

The final hold outs on the dwarven right flank were taken out but both sides had suffered dire casualties at this point.

The plague rats took up the high ground again ready to make a last stand against the stunty agressors.

Again dwarven cavalry prove their worth though and in a single charge route the infestation from the tower!

Now only the spearmen and the cavalry, both heavily wounded, are left to desperately charge the snippers.  In the end their resolve and skill proved no match for the hail of lead and were shot down before being able to cause a single wound.

Holiday Massacre Conclusion

Whew been a bit!  Things have been hectic but here's the write up of the end of the holiday battle!

Turn 4

The ghosts and Ice Golem tag teamed the Treat Takers as the enraged Santa moved on Dracula to avenge his fallen reindeer.   Meanwhile the gift Golem continued its doomed march toward the back lines.

With a mighty ho ho ho Santa smote Dracula while the tag team gave the Treat Takers a final 'treat'.  Unfortunately this mean opening up Santa's flanks to either the pumpkin king or The Monster, neither a good choice.

The elves continued to fight of the scarecrow on the far flank and as expected the holiday cannon fails to save the day by landing any solid hits.

Halloween now had victory within their grasp even after the hard losses early on.  The nightmare engine, Pumpkin king AND the Monster all charged Santa of Claus.  With their combined might the jolly overlord would finally fall.

Meanwhile the ghost pirates fired their ghastly cannon back at the happy holiday cannon causing minimal damage but demonstrating their superior ability to actually hit something!

Turn 5

The Xmas army had lost their leader but fought on in a desperate defense of their holiday.  The Ice Golem went in against the monster while the Ghosts decided to pick a fight with the nightmare engine.  Neither could make any worthwhile headway and simply bounced off their opponents to prepare for the counter charge.

The elves, ever stalwart, continued to fight a losing battle against the scarecrow.

Halloween's forces, with renewed vigour, easily wiped out the Ghosts of Xmas Whenever but the ice golem held firm.  The nightmare engine decided that the cannon proved a more tasty target should a 7th turn be on the menu.

The scarecrow finally rolled average and did enough damage to end up routing the elves.

With too little xmas spirit remaining Santa's forces gave up the tinsel and surrendered.  Halloween would now come twice a year!

Holiday Battle Continued...

The Halloween army has already lost quite a bit but the battle is far from over!

Turn 3

The festivities began anew with the Naughty Listers bravely charging back into the Pumpkin King and Santa crossing fists with Frankenstein's Monster and Rudolph leading the Ghosts into the Treat Takers.  On the far right flank the Ice Golem attacked the Trick Makers.

With Dracula fully regenerated the Nutcrackers opened fire once more this time causing substantially more damage!  Not enough to route the vampire but enough to make it harder to regenerate to full.

The Elves faced off again with the Scarecrow causing minor damage as he gets uncomfortably close.  Meanwhile the Holiday cannon STILL refuses to hit anything, perhaps too much ale the night before?

Again the pumpkin king holds against the tiny assault as the Naughty Listers begin to realize what their inevitable 'present' will be...

Santa let lose his jolly blows however the monster refused to yield to his festive belly.  Rudolph and his apathetic ghosts likewise failed to break the cute costumed trick or treaters and the xmas army ran up against its brick wall.

The Ice Golem on the other hand stomped those nasty Trick Makers into the ground and turned towards the battlefield once more hoping to even the odds along the front line.

The spooktastic soldiers having finally stood their ground charged back into the fray hoping to break the jolly lines.  The pumpkin king and Monster counter charged their previous foes once more with the Treat Takers assaulting Rudolph the Red and his blood red nose.

Dracula charged into his chosen foe bring the battle to Santa himself while the Nightmare Engine came to roaring life and prepared to crack the Nutcracker Suite in two!

The Scarecrow King had finally closed the distance and brought the fight directly to Santa's remaining elves.  His status as king however would be placed in doubt as he managed to deal no damage to the pointy eared toy makers.

The Gift Golem had been passed up for combat by the Nightmare Engines charged and found itself stranded and under heavy fire from the witch cover.  It held but was facing a struggle of several turns march toward the enemy position.

Beaten and exhausted Rudolph fell to the cries of 'trick or treat!' the spooks revenge firmly in hand.  Santa on the other hand would not fall so easily and withstood the blows of both the Monster and Dracula.

The Nightmare Engine proved true to his name and ended the sugar plum dreams of the nutcrackers.

The Pumpkin King in all his gangly might ended what remained of the Naughty Listers and turned to face Santa.

This time it was the Xmas Army that had taken several loses.  Will Santa be able to rally what remains of his holly jolly doom and win the day or will Christmas be a little less merry this year?
